ABOUT THE BREATHER

The Breather is the first drug-free, evidenced-based Inspiratory/Expiratory Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT) device used by COPD, CHF, Dysphagia, and Neuromuscular disease patients, as well as everyone interested in healthy aging and feeling their best. It trains both inspiratory and expiratory muscles independently. Clinical benefits of RMT include improved dyspnea, peak cough flow, laryngeal function, QOL, vent weaning, and speech and swallow performance.

After launching the original Breather for therapeutic use in 1980 and helping almost 1 million people to improve their quality of life, our therapists went back to the drawing board to make The Breather even better. Now with increased mouth comfort and easier inspiratory/expiratory dial control, The Breather is the #1 Best Selling Respiratory Muscle Trainer (RMT).

I was recommended this to help with lung capacity. I am 35 with the lung capacity of an 80yr old. I have yet to see how well it works from long term use. It is easy to use, clean, and the instructions are simple. Be warned! In the instructions it says not to bite down, well i did to hold it in place and the next day my jaw was killing me. I have never had jaw problems before. Almost a yr later and my jaw still hurts. I ended up being diagnosed with TMJ. This required doctor visits and an injection. None of which my insurance covers. So make sure you don’t bite down. I tried it again this evening, but this time I did not bite down and if I wake up with jaw pains again I’ll update my review. I will say about 20 minutes after using it I have crackling in my jaw, but no new pains yet.

I did a lot of research on respiratory training devices for hypertension, shortness of breath when exercising, blood oxygen level and general health (all of which are big issues for me). Ended up choosing The Breather. Ordered it on Amazon a few days ago and received it a couple of days ago. Used it once and found that there was now a seam between the top and bottom halves. They were still connected but was a gap between them. Turns out I am able to use it anyway (though am a bit nervous about doing so). Have updated my rating to reflect that it is still useable. Giving 4 stars and not 5 because it doesn’t seem very sturdy. However, I really like the design – especially the ease of use and the fact that it’s for expiratory as well as inspiratory training, the links to studies on the website documenting the benefits (in the footnotes), the excellent and helpful training videos (have watched the Foundational Protocol video several times), the reviews citing health improvements in areas I am hoping to improve, etc. Am hoping that it will make a big difference in my health. Have actually ordered more of them in case this one stops being usable and so I have backups. Also love that it was created by a female therapist and the people in the training videos were women. Loved that they mentioned this is a tool used by speech language pathologists (my sister is a SLP). Am retiring soon and want to get started on improving my health now so I can really enjoy my life after retirement! Very happy to have discovered this and am really hoping the 2 additional units I purchased work (and are a bit sturdier…).

As a chronic asthma sufferer since childhood, I bought this to help strengthen my diaphragm as I’m reading that Covid weakens the respiratory system. After 1 week I can feel my diaphragm muscles as being a bit sore from the exercise, so I think it’s working!

The iPhone app is just okay. Cumbersome to use and the dashboard seems to be lagging behind by one treatment or more. I do LOVE the timer that shows you when to inhale/exhale to help you pace yourself. I’m hoping it’ll also tell me to change my index number as it’s getting easy to inhale/exhale thru it.

You need to go to the product’s website in order to use this product. You will not be able to properly use it without watching the video. Additionally you need to watch the assistance video that shows you how to properly breath when using this product.

I had to watch the video several times until i got the proper technique down. However, if you do this once a day you will be able to get used to breathing the proper way without having to keep watching the video.

Once you get used to it. This really does help increase your breathing. I worry about the product breaking. It is made out of plastic and i fear if you drop it, it might crack. I am not trying to test that theory out but that is a reason I scored this product on the low side. That and the fact that the written instructions are not enough to be able to figure out how to use this product.

I have COPD and suffer from chronic lung infections. My resting oxygen saturation rates have been around 82 without oxygen. I have been using the breather consistently and my oxygen saturation are at 84. The good news is my resting oxygen saturation is not going down but up. I will be grateful if I can maintain the current resting saturation rate without oxygen. It is imperative that I build up my lung strength.

I bought this product to help improve my breathing. I have been vaping heavily for a few years and I can only imagine what damage it has done to my lungs, trying to quit and salvage my health before coronavirus hits. It is simple to use and I have already seen improvement in my breathing in the few weeks I’ve had the product. It teaches you to breath deeper, even while not using the product! Idk how this is even possible, but I noticed that the product forces me to use muscles in my chest, abs, neck, and face that I don’t typically use when breathing my normal lazy, shallow breaths. For smokers and vapers who are trying to quit, while this won’t help with your nicotine addiction, it definitely will satisfy your desire to draw on a cigarette/vape! Whenever I crave a bit of my vape, I’ll do 10 long inhalations and exhalations instead and it definitely helps curb the vape craving!!!! Additionally, the breathing exercises are helpful for those who are interested in the calming/meditative feelings brought on by proper breathing. Sometimes it’s hard to focus on your breath when faced with anxiety or when trying to meditate, this product makes it so much easier! For those reasons, I can see myself using this product even long after improving my lung function and quitting my vaping addiction. I would recommend this product to anyone looking to improve lung function or anyone interested in improving their meditative breathing technique.

I bought this for my son, who had a positive case of Covid19. He used this daily to exercise his lungs. He has thankfully recovered, but, will still use The Breather to continue to strengthen his lungs. Thankful I bought this for him!!!

  8. Robert Basler

I have COPD and purchased The Breather to strengthen my diaphragm muscles. I have significantly improved my breathing by using it every day. It also helps to empty your lungs of phlegm which makes breathing so much better. I have and will continue to tell people about how great this product is. Thank you so much. It is worth every penny!!

  9. Great Holistic tool

I used it when I had bronchitis to help my lungs. You don’t realize how much you are struggling until you use it.

  10. Marta Zick

After a particularly bad COPD flare up, I thought I would be stuck with oxygen therapy 24/7. My physical therapist son brought this to me. in 4 days, I was so much better. I only need oxygen therapy at night or exercise. I feel the medication actually reaching my lungs. a bonus my blood pressure has lowered. changed my life. THANK YOU BREATHER

  11. Hana Abdul

This is good an alternative to breathing therapy. I’m a smoker and it helps.

  12. Michael Siers

I’m end stage emphysema, 23% lung capacity.
I began using the Breather about a month ago and have seen tremendous results.
My endurance is much better, I don’t use my oxygen as much ( hardly at all during the day) and my over all breathing is better .
I would highly recommend the Breather to anyone with respiratory problems, it’s been a game changer for me !
    Thanks

I have been a respiratory therapist for 37 years. I do pulmonary rehab now in skilled facilities. I use the breather for COPD and PTS with dysphagia. With time i see their sob decline and ability to ambulate further. I also instruct use to help with anxiety that prevents PTS from doing pursed lip breathing.

After reading several articles related to controlling hypertension with breathing exercises, I purchased this device to see if it would work for me. Simple in concept and easy to use, It lowered my SBP (systolic blood pressure) by about 5 points with the very first use. After using it twice a day for two weeks, my blood pressure was nearly ideal… all without pharmaceuticals. Of course, everyone is different and you shouldn’t stop your meds or rely on this thing without consulting with your doctor but, for me, it works.
